FOOT INFECTION

Infections can range from an unsightly verruca or fungal toenail, to dangerous bacterial infections such as sepsis, and everything in between. Our Podiatrists are trained to spot the early signs of infection to help diagnose your condition and to offer you the most relevant and scientifically proven treatment options. MyFootMedic Podiatrists can prescribe a range of antibiotics for bacterial infections, medications for fungal infections and help with the most up-to-date treatments for viral infections.

What is Athletes Foot?

Athletes foot (Tinea Pedis) is a common fungal infection impacting the skin of feet. Although in many cases this is a relatively harmless infection, it can lead to a more serious bacterial infection requiring antibiotics and strong anti-fungal medication, which may result in side effects.

Despite its name, this infection impacts both the athletic and non-athletic population, and can be caused by many factors such as poor hygiene or reduced immune response. It is commonly associated with fungal nail infections.

What is a Fungal Nail infection?

Fungal Nail infection (onychomycosis) may cause the nail to thicken or change in colour. In extreme cases the nail may become painful, detach or cause a bacterial infection.

Why should I worry about a Skin Infection?

These can be caused by either viral, bacterial, fungal or parasitic infections. If you believe that you are suffering with an infection it is always best to be seen quickly. Common signs of an infection include: pain, redness, swelling, oozing or discharge (exudate), bad odour, itching, heat and sudden changes to skin appearance. Skin infections can range between a mild irritant to life threatening.

If left untreated, a simple bacterial infection (such as that caused by an ingrown toenail) can lead to a more serious skin infection, such as cellulitis or sepsis, which may require hospitalisation.

What is a Verruca?

Verruca Pedis (Foot Wart) is a common viral infection caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). This infection can be found widespread across the planet, on the majority of surfaces, and impacts approximately 10% of the population. Typically your body’s immune system (defensive system) mounts an attack against infections, however, this virus is able to stay hidden from the body’s natural defensive system.
