FOOT CARE

What is Callus?

Areas of thickened hard skin (keratin) are known as callus. These locations can become painful or even lead to the skin splitting. Once split, the skin may start to bleed or become infected, requiring more serious treatment.

Please visit our callus treatment page for more information.

What is a Corn?

These are localised, often pebble like formations of hard skin. The sensation is often explained to feeling similar to that of walking on a shard of glass or a stone.

For more information please please visit our Corn Removal page.

What causes skin to crack?

Hard skin (callus) that loses it’s elasticity can eventually split or crack, this can be particularly painful and may lead to infection. Cracked skin occurs due to:
• Dehydrated dry skin
• Footwear
• Tight muscles
• Foot structure
• Medical conditions (e.g. Diabetes, Psoriasis)
• Genetic factors

Why are damaged nails a problem?

Damaged nails can be particularly painful and lead to an infection. If severely damaged, your nail may become permanently thickened, or bleeding may present underneath the nail. This can cause considerable pressure and discomfort leading to ulceration and infection of the nail bed. If the nail has completely fallen off, the skin surrounding the nail may start closing inwards. This can lead to an ingrown toenail.

How can MyFootMedic help?

Podiatrists are specialists in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to the foot and ankle. If repetitive trauma is the cause of damage then these factors must be addressed to prevent reoccurrence (e.g. footwear).

Services we offer include:

• In extreme cases; Nail surgery
• Request for NHS referral via a letter to your GP

What is an Ingrown Toenail?

An ingrown toenail is when the nail (or a fragment known as a nail spike) pierces the skin surrounding the nail. This can be particularly painful, especially if infected. There are four nerves in each toe, making them highly sensitive and susceptible to pain.

Please visit our ingrown toenail treatment page for more information.

What is Hang Nail?

This is not a nail problem in itself, but where the skin against the nail becomes split or forms a hard spike. Hang nail can lead to pain, bleeding and infection.

What causes Hang Nail?

• Incorrect nail cutting
• Trauma
• Tight footwear
• Genetic factors
• Medical conditions

What is Psoriatic Nail?

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that causes skin cells to be produced in excess and at a faster than normal rate. This can have many impacts on the body; one of which is to change the shape, thickness and colour of your nails. These changes are referred to as Psoriatic Nails. This condition is less likely to appear without previous impacts of Psoriasis and is rarely the first sign of Psoriasis. These nails are often mistaken for fungal nails.

What causes a Thickened Toenail?

Nails can thicken due to: trauma, pressure, friction, age or infection. It is thought that the nails thicken as a protective mechanism by the body. Once thickened, they can cause pain via pressure and ulceration underneath the nail. This can lead to infection or discomfort in everyday activities and may make purchasing shoes difficult.

SPORTS & INJURY

What is Achilles Tendinopathy?

The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the body. It is found at the back of the ankle and spans from the heel bone into the calf muscles of your leg. Tendinopathy refers to the damage of a tendon. Injuries can range from a mild strain to a complete rupture. Achilles Tendinopathy typically occurs when trying to accelerate from a complete stand-still, or via sudden and intense jumping actions. It can present in any age group and is not always associated with sporting activity.

Please visit our Achilles Tendinopathy treatment page for more information.

What is Anterior Impingement Syndrome?

This condition causes pain at the front of your ankle. It can be due to either inflamed tissues (such as ligaments and tendons – specifically; the joint capsule and synovium), or bony changes (arthritic) to the ankle joint. This problem will often cause an acute pain whilst the foot is flexed/bending towards the shin bone.

What causes Anterior Impingement Syndrome?

Stress from excessive ankle bending and compressive forces, such as squatting, can cause inflammation to the soft tissues at the front of the ankle. If repetitive or substantial, then arthritic bony changes can present, causing pain and a reduction in motion.

What is an Ankle Sprain?

A sprain refers to damage to a ligament. Ligaments are soft tissues that connect one bone to another bone and help to keep our joints stable and prevent dislocations. An Ankle Sprain implies damage to the ligaments surrounding the ankle.

What causes an Ankle Sprain?

Ankle Sprains are a common occurrence. They are often caused by twisting awkwardly on your foot. This trauma leads to damage of the ligaments on either side of you ankle, more often surrounding the outside ankle bone (lateral malleolus). Typically tendons are also injured. Repetitive ankle sprains may lead to bony changes (arthritic) and muscle imbalance within the foot and ankle. Predisposing factors include:

• Foot structure
• Ankle strength
• Muscle and tendon tightness
• Joint restrictions
• Footwear
• Genetic factors (e.g. hypermobility)

What is Arch Strain?

Arch Strain is not a specific diagnosis but a more generalised term for pain within the arch(es) of your foot. A strain refers to damage to a muscle or tendon.

What causes Arch Strains?

Arch Strain occurs when the muscles, tendons and ligaments supporting the arch undertake more load than they can handle. There can be many causes for the tissues surrounding the arch to become strained. These include a single moment of excessive tissue stress, or repetitive micro-injuries. For a specific diagnosis your Podiatrist may undertake a thorough neurological, vascular and musculoskeletal assessment. Predisposing factors are:

• Foot structure
• Muscle weakness or imbalance
• Walking style, poor footwear
• Weight
• Medical conditions
• Genetic factors (e.g. hypermobility)

How can MyFootMedic help?

How can a Podiatrist help treat Back Pain?

Back pain can be caused by a variety of conditions and maybe due to lower limb dysfunction. Podiatrists are not specialists in back pain, but are able to assess whether your lower limb function may be linked to your back pain. For this reason, we recommend that initially you visit a back pain specialist (Orthopaedic Doctor, Physiotherapist, Osteopath, Chiropractor) prior to assessment by one of our Podiatrists. If your back pain specialist believes that your lower limb function may be a contributor, we would then further assess your lower limb function and discuss the treatment options available.

What is Freiberg’s Infraction?

This is a rare condition whereby the blood supply to one of the metatarsal bones (long bones in the midfoot) is damaged. This is most common in the second metatarsal bone. Freiberg’s Infraction occurs when the integrity of the bone diminishes due to a lack of nutrients, which is known as avascular necrosis. Often the area will become enlarged at the joint linking the metatarsal to the phalanges (toe bones). Although the causation of this condition is poorly understood, it is thought to be linked to repetitive microtrauma.

Is Heel Pain common?

The heel is a very common location of pain; 10% of the UK population will suffer with heel pain during their life time. The heel bone takes substantial impact during every step you take and when pain occurs at this location walking becomes particularly difficult. Plantar fasciitis is a commonly used term in relation to heel pain, but is simply one condition that may be causing symptoms. A thorough investigation must be undertaken prior to a diagnosis. This investigation and diagnosis will determine which treatment options would best suit the problem at hand.

What is Lis Franc’s Injury?

This condition can occur if the bones or ligaments in the midfoot are broken or damaged, the result is separation between the first and second metatarsals above the arch. A twist or fall maybe all that is required to cause this injury, resulting in gapping between these metatarsals. Injuries can range from a sprained ligament to more complicated fractures and dislocations. This injury presents with bruising and swelling on the top and bottom of the foot. Pain can range from mild to intense and is often increased by standing or raising up onto tip toes. Dependant on the severity of the injury, either conservative non surgical or surgical treatment may be required.

What is Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome?

Often referred to as ‘shin splints’, this condition causes pain to the middle third of Tibia (shin bone). It is thought to occur when the Tibia bends under pressure/impact. This can be caused by landing from a height or repetitive impact, for example by running. The middle third of the Tibia is the thinnest and weakest part of the Tibia, impact and compression is thought to create a ‘bone bending moment’ at the Tibia’s weakest point. This may lead to micro fractures of the periosteum (thin layer surrounding the bone) or of the bone itself. The condition is often related to foot structure and tight musculature, as well as poor footwear choices.

Metatarsalgia is more of a descriptive term than a diagnosis. It simply implies that there is pain located in the front of the foot. This can be caused by a multitude of conditions such as: bunions, impact injury, hammer toes, poor footwear, muscle imbalance, corns etc.

Please visit our Metatarsalgia treatment page for more information.

What is a Morton’s Neuroma?

A Morton’s neuroma is a condition whereby the sheath surrounding the nerve between the third and fourth metatarsals of the foot becomes inflamed and enlarged. Symptoms can vary between a mild ache and numbness, to an acute, sharp and severe pain.

Please visit our Morton’s Neuroma treatment page for more information.

What is Patellofemoral Syndrome?

The Patellofemoral joint consists of the Femur (the long bone between the hip and the knee) and the Patella (the knee cap). Patellofemoral syndrome is a common form of pain that is felt on the underside of the Patella. This pain is thought to be due to stress and irritation of the joint surfaces between the Patella and the Femur. The Patella normally glides in a groove at the front end of the Femur. Irritation and stress occurs when ineffective gliding takes place or if the Patella ‘mis-tracks’ in this groove. Pressure is increased in the Patellofemoral joint when the knee bends.

This condition is most commonly caused by muscle imbalance (of the Quadriceps muscle) but may also be the result of injury or poor biomechanics. If this pain is ignored and repetitive trauma is caused over a long period of time, permanent bony changes can occur to the joint surfaces. Patellofemoral Syndrome can impact anyone, however, it is most commonly seen in the sporting population.

What is Patella Tendinopathy?

The Patella tendon links the Patella (knee cap) and Tibia (shin bone) at the front of the knee. It is controlled by the function of the Quadricep muscles. When the Quadriceps contract, the Patella tendon pulls tight and straightens the leg. Damage to this tendon can cause pain to your knee or upper Tibia, and is often painful when using stairs.

What is Peroneal Tendinopathy?

A tendon connects a muscle to a bone. There are three Peroneal tendons: Peroneus Longus, Peroneus Brevis and Peroneus Tertius. These function as powerful ankle stabilisers and all cause your feet to abduct (rotate/twist outwards) and evert the foot (cause the arch of the foot to reduce in height, with the outside of the foot raising off of the floor). They are commonly injured in combination with an ankle sprain, this can cause elongation and trauma to the Peroneal tendons.

If severe or repetitive, damage can lead to weakness of the Peroneal tendons, allowing the invertor muscles (muscles that raise the arch profile and lift the inside of the foot off of the floor) to over power the evertor Peroneals. This can lead to an acquired high arch deformity. Symptoms can range from mild to debilitating depending on the severity of the condition. Pain is usually present to the outside of the ankle and up the outer edge of the leg.

What is Plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis (also known as plantar fasciopathy and plantar fasciosis) is a common form of heel pain. 10% of the population suffer from this debilitating condition during their life time. The plantar fascia is a ligament that runs from your heel bone via three bands (medial, central and lateral bands) into the front of your foot. These bands prevent over elongation of the foot and aid in stabilisation and shock absorption.

Plantar fasciitis occurs when the ligament becomes degenerative (originally thought to be inflammatory), typically at the inside of the heel bone. Symptoms are often at their worst during the first steps in the morning, upon standing after periods of rest, or during periods of exercise. This condition impacts both the sporting and non-sporting population.

Factors relating to plantar fasciitis include:
• Sudden increase in activity levels
• Injury
• Foot structure
• Muscle imbalance
• Footwear
• Weight
• Employment whereby you are standing for prolonged periods of time (8hours+)

What is Posterior Tibial Tendinopathy?

Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction (PTTD) is the leading cause of acquired flat foot syndrome. This condition is caused by damage to the Tibialis Posterior tendon, which helps to invert the foot and raise the arch profile. When this tendon weakens or elongates, its capacity to raise and maintain the arch height is diminished. Symptoms usually consist of a deep ache that worsens with activity, but may become a sharp pain. Knee pain is also typically associated. If caught early, conservative treatment can resolve the problem, however, if severe or left for too long, surgery may be required.

What is Sesamoiditis?

The sesamoids are two accessory bones that are located underneath the big toe joint. They are important to help aid in the function of the flexor tendons that run on the underside of the big toe. Sesamoiditis occurs when these two bones become inflamed or fractured. Symptoms are typically localised with sharp acute pain, and often the area will appear swollen and red. Pain experienced can be replicated via compression of these bones.

This condition may be caused by impact, either repetitive or a single high impact movement. The use of high heels is also commonly associated.

What is Synovitis?

The synovium is the connective tissue membrane surrounding certain (synovial) joints, and secretes lubricants to aid in joint motion. Synovitis refers to damage of this connective tissue, where the membrane surrounding the joint becomes traumatised and inflamed. Inflammation increases the fluid and pressure levels within the joint and can cause instability. Synovitis typically presents similarly to that of a capsulitis; with swelling and redness of the impacted joint.

INFECTION

What is Athletes Foot?

Athletes foot (Tinea Pedis) is a common fungal infection impacting the skin of feet. Although in many cases this is a relatively harmless infection, it can lead to a more serious bacterial infection requiring antibiotics and strong anti-fungal medication, which may result in side effects.

Despite its name, this infection impacts both the athletic and non-athletic population, and can be caused by many factors such as poor hygiene or reduced immune response. It is commonly associated with fungal nail infections.

What is a Fungal Nail infection?

Fungal Nail infection (onychomycosis) may cause the nail to thicken or change in colour. In extreme cases the nail may become painful, detach or cause a bacterial infection.

Please visit our Fungal Nail Treatment page for more information.

Why should I worry about a Skin Infection?

These can be caused by either viral, bacterial, fungal or parasitic infections. If you believe that you are suffering with an infection it is always best to be seen quickly. Common signs of an infection include: pain, redness, swelling, oozing or discharge (exudate), bad odour, itching, heat and sudden changes to skin appearance. Skin infections can range between a mild irritant to life threatening.

If left untreated, a simple bacterial infection (such as that caused by an ingrown toenail) can lead to a more serious skin infection, such as cellulitis or sepsis, which may require hospitalisation.

What is a Verruca?

Verruca Pedis (Foot Wart) is a common viral infection caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). This infection can be found widespread across the planet, on the majority of surfaces, and impacts approximately 10% of the population. Typically your body’s immune system (defensive system) mounts an attack against infections, however, this virus is able to stay hidden from the body’s natural defensive system.

Please visit our Verruca Treatment page for more information

MEDICAL

What is Dementia/Alzheimer’s?

Dementia is an umbrella term that encompasses conditions impacting memory and/or thinking skills, for which Alzheimer’s is a form accounting for 60-80% of cases. Dementia symptoms can mean that self care is incredibly difficult, both for those with the condition and for their carers.

Amputations

Amputations can be caused by a multitude of problems; including poor blood supply, nerve damage, infection or injury. The leading cause of amputation is due to Diabetes and its effects on all four of these primary causes. The removal of body parts from the lower limb can lead to drastic changes in the way we walk, increasing the load on the remaining joints/limb. These changes can cause pain. Commonly associated problems include callus, corns, joint changes (e.g. arthritis), tendinopathy and overloading injuries.

What is a Bunion?

A Bunion can be identified by a bony bump on the inside of the big toe joint and deviation of the big toe itself. This bump is caused by changes and instability to the joint and soft tissues (muscles, tendons and ligaments) acting on the big toe and first metatarsal (a bone in your forefoot). This condition can cause a multitude of problems, or none. Often, the main complaint is with either pain from within the big toe joint or from difficulties finding comfortable shoes. In severe cases, the second toe may sit over or under the big toe itself. The big toe joint typically takes 60% of your body weight whilst walking.

Complications at this joint, such as bunions, can cause pressure redistribution to the lesser toe joints which are not as capable at bearing weight. This redistribution is known as transferred metatarsalgia. Corns and Callus, as well as nail complications, are often a side effect of bunions.

How can Cancer impact my feet?

Cancer treatments can cause significant changes to your feet. Chemotherapy and immunosuppressant medications can also reduce your body’s ability to fight off infections. For this reason, it is more common to suffer with infections such as athletes foot, fungal nails, bacterial infections and verrucae.

Nail changes are a common side effect of cancer treatments, ranging from fungal infections to ingrown toenails. Prevention and early detection can substantially reduce the risk of further development.

What is Complex Regional Pain Syndrome?

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a severe and debilitating condition that leads to intense and persistent pain. This condition often follows an injury or infection, and the level of pain does not typically match the intensity expected. Symptoms are usually confined to a single limb such as one leg, however multiple limbs may be involved. Intense pain can often be triggered by light touch sensations (e.g. by a feather) and the affected limb(s) typically appear swollen or discoloured. Symptoms may decrease or resolve in time, but this is not always the case.

How can MyFootMedic help?

Podiatrists are specialists in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to the foot and ankle. Although we do not treat CRPS at My Foot Medic, we can help to reduce/prevent symptoms caused by secondary conditions such as ingrown toenails, or via regular routine care.

What causes Foot Deformity?

Foot Deformity can be caused by a range of genetic, congenital and trauma related factors. This may impact one or multiple joints and soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments) within your feet, as well as the way in which you walk. Foot deformities such as Club Foot can have a dramatic impact on your life and cause considerable pain, or may have little to no impact dependant on the level of severity. Foot deformity can be strongly influenced or even caused by the footwear choices that we make.

What is Gout?

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis that is caused by high levels of uric acid. Excessive uric acid leads to the formation of urate crystals within joints, which erode bone. Uric acid is the formation of purines, which are consumed within certain types of food and drink such as beer and organ meat (e.g. eating liver). Gout is a common cause of pain to the big toe joint but can also effect other joints, typically at the end of the limbs. Although common, Gout is regularly misdiagnosed and symptoms can present similarly to many other conditions. Treatment for Gout typically consists of oral (tablet) preventative medication and strong anti-inflammatory medication prescribed by your GP.

What are the symptoms of Gout?

• Severe pain (patients with gout will often be unable to rest a bed sheet over the impacted joint due to the pain)
• Redness and swelling of the joint
• Fast onset of symptoms
• One or more joints impacted
• Urate crystals may be visible through the skin in severe cases

How can My Foot Medic help?

Although My Foot Medic does not specifically treat gout, we can aid in the correct diagnosis and alternate treatment plan when misdiagnosed. We can also reduce the pain in joints previously impacted by Gout.

Services we offer include:

What is a Hammer Toe/ Mallet Toe/ Claw Toe?

These are three different deformities of the toe, caused by soft tissue (muscles, tendons and ligaments) and bony changes within the foot. There are three joints per toe with the exception of the big toes which only have two joints.

• Hammer Toe – deformity of the middle toe joint
• Mallet Toe – deformity of the end toe joint
• Claw Toe – deformity of all three joints within the toe

All three of these deformities can cause pain and discomfort, and the deviation in toe positions can lead to abnormal pressure points and arthritis. In mild cases or early stages, conservative care (non surgical treatment) may be sufficient to resolve symptoms, however, more severe cases or later stages of the condition may require surgery.

What is Hypermobility?

Hypermobility is where a joint can move beyond a typical range of motion. This may be in a localised area such as the foot, or systemic (many areas affected) such as with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome or Marfan Syndrome.

What are the symptoms of Hypermobility?

In severe forms, hypermobility can impact more than just the joints, and can have an effect on your body’s connective tissue as a whole. For this reason, Hypermobility is commonly associated with digestive problems such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), as well as effecting other organs such as the heart and lungs. The excessive mobility of joints means that the surrounding muscles and tendons are required to function at a high rate in order to stabilise your body.

Due to this higher demand from the muscles and tendons, people with Hypermobility often suffer from fatigue, muscle pains, sprains, strains, dislocations, instability and early onset arthritis. The over recruitment of muscles and tendons can lead to them becoming tight or injured. Symptoms usually present to load bearing joints such as the feet, ankles, knees, hips, lower back and neck.

What does Immunocompromised mean?

The immune system is the body’s natural defensive system, it is used to fight off infections. Being Immunocompromised is where the body’s defensive system is impaired, meaning that you are more likely to suffer from infections and that these infections can escalate quickly. Becoming immunocompromised may be due to:

• Genetic factors or illness (e.g. HIV)
• Medication induced (e.g. Immunosuppressant medications for rheumatoid arthritis). With this condition the immune system attacks your own body (autoimmune disease). Medication for these conditions includes immunosuppressant’s, which dampen down the impacts of the immune system.

What is a leg length discrepancy?

A Leg Length Discrepancy (LLD) is whereby one leg is longer than the other. This can impact your feet, knees, hips, back and neck. An LLD may be caused by a multitude of factors but can simply be placed into two categories:

• Structural – this is where the LLD is caused by the length of your bones, typically seen as one Femur bone or Tibia bone being longer than on the other leg. This can be genetic or present following surgery of the hip, femur, knee, tibia or foot.
• Functional – caused by soft tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments) tightness on one of the limbs. Over time this can cause a substantial change in the way in which you stand and walk.

How can MyFootMedic help?

Podiatrists are specialists in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to the lower limb.

Services we offer include:
• Biomechanical assessment
• In cases of structural LLD – Insoles and orthotics. In some cases bespoke footwear is required. We currently do not offer a bespoke or orthopaedic shoe service.
• In cases of functional LLD, dependant on the location of causative factors we can treat with: – Injury Rehabilitation
– Where appropriate, we may refer you on to a more relevant specialist
• Providing a letter to the GP to request a referral to the appropriate services in the NHS

What are Neurological Conditions?

Neurological conditions are disorders causes by damage to the nervous system. Damage to the nerves can be caused by:

• Genetic (e.g. Cerebral Palsy, Charcot Marie Tooth)
• Disease (e.g. Diabetes, Pernicious Anaemia)
• Trauma (e.g. Infection, Injury)
There are three main types of nerve:
• Sensory – these allow how to have sensation to touch, heat and pain
• Motor – send conscious signals to contract and relax muscles in order to move body parts
• Autonomic – nerves regulating involuntary body functions. They control the necessary function of organs (e.g. heart contraction, skin gland secretions, temperature regulation)

What are the symptoms of Neurological Conditions?

Symptoms will depend on the types of nerve impacted (sensory, motor, autonomic) and the location of damage (central neuropathy = brain, brain stem, spinal cord, peripheral neuropathy = peripheral nerves):

• Sensory Neuropathy – reduced or heightened impact of one or more sensory sensations: pain, pressure, temperature, touch
• Motor Neuropathy – tight or flaccid muscle tone, muscle spasms, reduced dexterity, paralysis, abnormal reflexes, poor balance/coordination, unusual walking style
• Autonomic Neuropathy – dry skin, dizziness, digestive difficulties, urinary complications, irregular sweating, blood pressure fluctuation

These all impact our feet, from not being able to detect a cut or a wound on the foot, to changing the way in which we walk and increasing our risk of falling.

What is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a condition that causes your joints to become painful and stiff. The condition occurs when the cartilage (cushioning) between the joints wears away, and the ends of the bones become damaged and rough. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and is associated with wear and tear or injury. Typically three changes occur; joint space narrowing, flattening of the bone ends (enlargement), and reduction in motion. This may become noticeable as a red, swollen and stiff joint.

Although Osteoarthritis is common in the elderly population, osteoarthritis can also present in young adults and occasionally in children. You are more likely to suffer with osteoarthritis if you have damaged a joint in the past or if you are overweight.

How can MyFootMedic help?

Podiatrists are specialists in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to the foot and ankle. A common form of treatment for osteoarthritis in the foot is via Insoles and orthotics. Orthotics can help redistribute pressure and stress away from the affected joint. They can also be used to increase or reduce the joints range of motion in some instances.

Services we offer include:
• Biomechanical assessment
• Rehabilitation
– Stretching
– Strengthening
– Joint manipulation
– Soft tissue mobilisation

What is Peripheral Vascular Disease?

Peripheral Vascular Disease is caused by a blockage(s) within the arteries (not inclusive of the heart and brain). Arteries help carry blood around the body. This is necessary to supply oxygen and nutrients to muscles and organs, as without these they cannot function. Peripheral Vascular Disease most commonly impacts the legs, causing cramping and pain during exercise, it also has many other impacts on our legs and feet, including:

• Cold legs and feet
• Grey or blue legs and feet (occasionally red)
• Chilblains – a small red wound caused by a lack of blood supply to the skin
• Pain
• Slow healing
• Ulceration – breakdown of skin creating an open wound
• Reduced skin quality
• Calf pain upon exercise or at rest

PAD can be caused by a multitude of factors. The most common causes are smoking, diabetes, diet, obesity and high blood pressure. These all cause damage to the arteries as well as causing deposits of fatty plaques within the artery walls. This results in less flexible, and narrower arteries, with less space for blood to flow through.

How can MyFootMedic help?

Podiatrists are specialists in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to the foot and ankle. Early detection and prevention is key and Podiatrists are trained to detect PAD and give preventative advice. Testing may include assessment of your blood pressure, Doppler analysis of the pulses within your feet and ankle brachial pressure index (ABPI) to determine differences in blood flow from your upper body to your lower body.

Services we offer include:
• Foot health check
• Vascular assessment
• Activity advice
• Routine foot care
• ‘At risk’ foot care
• Insoles and orthotics to redistribute pressure away from problematic sites
• Footwear advice
• Referral for further assessment and treatment: GP, Cardiologist, Vascular specialists, Dietitian

What is Psoriatic Arthritis?

Psoriatic arthritis is an inflammatory joint disease that effects people with psoriasis (related skin condition). This is an autoimmune condition, meaning that the body’s own defensive system starts attacking the joints, causing them to become inflamed and painful.

Often the tendons surrounding the joints will also become inflamed, increasing the pain felt. 80% of sufferers will have had outbursts of psoriasis affecting their skin prior to the affects of Psoriatic Arthritis, however only 30% of people suffering from psoriasis affecting their skin are impacted by Psoriatic Arthritis. This condition leads to the deterioration of cartilage (cushioning in the joint), and in the bone ends at a joint, which causes swelling, pain and a reduction of motion at the impacted site.

How can MyFootMedic help?

Podiatrists are specialists in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to the foot and ankle. Treatment of the underlying causes of Psoriatic Arthritis is undertaken via GPs and Rheumatologists and not by Podiatrists, however, there is currently no cure. What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory condition that attacks the synovium. Synovium is the membrane surrounding certain joints and secretes lubricants to aid in joint motion. Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune condition, meaning that the body’s own defensive system starts attacking itself, and causes chronic inflammation (inflammation over a long time).

This chronic inflammation causes damage to bones and tendons surrounding a joint, however, the inflammation also attacks organs such as the heart and lungs. The disease affects a wide range of people but is more common in women.

Common symptoms include:
• Morning stiffness
• Red, hot, swollen joints. These usually present symmetrically in both sides of the body
• Hand and foot deformity
• Periods of remission and flare ups
• Fatigue

How can MyFootMedic help?

Podiatrists are specialists in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to the foot and ankle.
