REGAIN MOBILITY AND COMFORT FOR YOUR FEET AT MYFOOTMEDIC

Heel pain affects around 10% of the UK population at some point in their life. This is an unsurprising statistic when you consider how much impact the heel bone absorbs with every step. Noticed tenderness or pain in the back of your heel? An assessment from MyFootMedic can help.

Plantar Fascitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It occurs when the plantar fascia ligament (which runs from your heel bone to the front of your foot) degenerates or becomes inflamed. If identified, our podiatrists can offer rehabilitation programmes, orthotics, steroid injections, and preventative advice.

OTHER CONDITIONS THAT CAN CAUSE PAIN IN THE HEEL OF YOUR FOOT INCLUDE:

Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction

Also known as ‘Adult Acquired Flatfoot Syndrome', PTTD is caused by failure of the posterior tibial tendon, which runs down the back of the heel. It can lead to the arch collapsing.

Achilles Tendinopathy

This occurs when the tendon attaching the calf muscles to your heel becomes inflamed — usually after overuse or a sports injury.

Stress Fracture

Small cracks are common in weight-bearing bones such as the Calcaneus (heel bone). To identify a stress fracture, you may need an MRI scan.

MIDFOOT PAIN TREATMENTS

Midfoot pain can appear suddenly due to injury or develop gradually. Sudden onset could be down to a midtarsal joint sprain (affecting the joints between the midfoot bones) or arch strain caused by excessive tissue stress.

Other conditions that may cause midfoot pain include:

  • Cuboid Syndrome: When the cuboid bone on the on the outside of the foot becomes restricted, it can cause a sharp pain on the outer side, and sometimes underside, of the foot.
  • Lis Franc’s Injury: If the bones or ligaments in the midfoot break or become damaged through injury, it can result in the first and second metatarsals separating, leading to sprained ligaments, fractures, and dislocations.
  • Arthritis: A very common cause of foot pain; symptoms of midfoot arthritis can develop gradually over time. You may notice pain, swelling and stiffness that worsens when you stand or walk.

There are several treatments for midfoot pain depending on the type of damage and its severity, from joint manipulations to steroid injections. At MyFootMedic, we will identify the root of your pain and may be able to help through rehabilitation or by providing a referral for surgical assessment.

FOREFOOT PAIN, METATARSALGIA, AND TOE PAIN

Ongoing pain in the front of the foot is known as Metatarsalgia. This condition may cause a range of uncomfortable sensations affecting your bones, joints or nerves.

Common causes of forefoot pain and Metatarsalgia include bone fractures, joint inflammation, nerve issues (Morton’s Neuroma), and mechanics (the way you walk and distribute your weight).

Have you developed discomfort in one or more of your toes? Most commonly, conditions such as Turf Toe and Sesamoiditis affect the big toe, though ill-fitting shoes can also cause problems in the little toe, too.

  • Turf Toe: named after its link to sports injuries on artificial turf, this usually occurs when the big toe bends too much towards the shin bone. You may experience swelling, bruising or reduced toe mobility.
  • Sesamoiditis: this involves the inflammation or fracturing of the sesamoids (small bones beneath the big toe joint). It can cause swelling and sharp, acute pain. Sesamoiditis can occur after a sudden impact or can develop from regularly wearing high heels.
