Foot care may include the treatment of unwanted conditions such as ingrown toenails, or general nail cutting and hard skin removal to keep your feet in good health. At MyFootMedic we use sterilised equipment and aseptic techniques to ensure that your feet are maintained safely.
What is Callus?
Areas of thickened hard skin (keratin) are known as callus. These locations can become painful or even lead to the skin splitting. Once split, the skin may start to bleed or become infected, requiring more serious treatment.

What is a Corn?
These are localised, often pebble like formations of hard skin. The sensation is often explained to feeling similar to that of walking on a shard of glass or a stone.

Why are damaged nails a problem?
Damaged nails can be particularly painful and lead to an infection. If severely damaged, your nail may become permanently thickened, or bleeding may present underneath the nail. This can cause considerable pressure and discomfort leading to ulceration and infection of the nail bed. If the nail has completely fallen off, the skin surrounding the nail may start closing inwards. This can lead to an ingrown toenail.

What is an Ingrown Toenail?
An ingrown toenail is when the nail (or a fragment known as a nail spike) pierces the skin surrounding the nail. This can be particularly painful, especially if infected. There are four nerves in each toe, making them highly sensitive and susceptible to pain.

What is Psoriatic Nail?
Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that causes skin cells to be produced in excess and at a faster than normal rate. This can have many impacts on the body; one of which is to change the shape, thickness and colour of your nails. These changes are referred to as Psoriatic Nails. This condition is less likely to appear without previous impacts of Psoriasis and is rarely the first sign of Psoriasis. These nails are often mistaken for fungal nails.

What causes a Thickened Toenail?
Nails can thicken due to: trauma, pressure, friction, age or infection. It is thought that the nails thicken as a protective mechanism by the body. Once thickened, they can cause pain via pressure and ulceration underneath the nail. This can lead to infection or discomfort in everyday activities and may make purchasing shoes difficult.
